If you’re looking for a way to bring more joy, motivation, and community into your knitting, a Knit Along (KAL) is the perfect opportunity! With the TKGA KAL 2025 around the corner, there’s no better time to explore tips for making the most out of a knit along!
1. Choose the Pattern for Your Level and Goals
Since Pick-Your-Pattern Cardigan gives participants flexibility, take some time to reflect on what you want to achieve with this project. This “make-it-your-own” cardigan includes design options so you can create your own version, including a long or short body length, long sleeves or three-quarter sleeves, and lace or cable panels. Do you want to try a challenging technique or focus on something you can knit while you relax? When selecting your design options, consider your current skill level and any new techniques you want to master. Choosing a pattern that aligns with your personal goals will keep you engaged and motivated to reach the finish line.
2. Plan Your Materials in Advance
One of the best parts of participating in a KAL is the anticipation of starting fresh with new yarn and tools. Spend some time gathering all the materials you’ll need. Check the yarn weight, needle sizes, and any other notions required, and plan to have them ready before the start date. For the KAL 2025, having everything prepared ahead of the January 11th start date will help you get started without any delays. We’ve put together a handy one-page PDF planner with all the key information in one spot for you! Mark your design selections here to keep track of your decisions. The designer of Pick-Your-Pattern Cardigan, Jennifer Kent, has made a video of the tools and supplies you’ll need so watch this first.
Before the KAL begins, you’ll want to swatch to check for gauge! This is the best way to understand how the yarn will work up for you.
3. Set a Realistic Knitting Schedule
Pencil in your knitting time on your calendar, if it won’t stress you out! Having a knitting routine to reach a realistic goal based on your availability could mean a few rows a day or specific milestones each week. Having a manageable schedule will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and allow you to see consistent progress. A good tip is to break the project into small, achievable sections, whether that means knitting to a certain length or pattern repeats.
Remember, KALs are not a race. If you miss a day or two, simply adjust your schedule rather than rushing to catch up. The goal is to enjoy the process, not to finish first!
Unlike some KALs, TKGA’s KAL is not a mystery! Jennifer Kent’s design is published in the Winter 24/25 Cast On Magazine (available now to TKGA Members). The pattern will also be offered free to all knitters on Ravelry starting November 15.
4. Engage with the Community
One of the greatest perks of a KAL is the opportunity to connect with fellow knitters. Whether it’s through TKGA’sFacebook Group, TKGA’s Ravelry Group or using #TKGAKAL25 on Instagram, take the time to interact. Post progress photos, share any struggles you encounter, and offer support to others. This is especially beneficial if you’re tackling new techniques. Knitters of all levels participate in KALs, so you’re likely to find helpful advice or encouragement from those who have been where you are.
5. Learn as You Go
KALs are a great time to build your skills, especially with projects like the Pick-Your-Pattern Cardigan that allows you to choose options suited to your learning goals. Take advantage of resources such as tutorials, technique videos, or even the tips shared by other participants. Since the TKGA KAL community includes knitters with a range of expertise, there’s always a chance to pick up new skills or understand a technique in a new way.
Be open to trying new approaches and making mistakes. Learning from challenges is one of the best ways to grow as a knitter, and KALs are a supportive environment for doing just that!
6. Celebrate Your Progress
Finally, remember to enjoy each step of the way. A KAL is not just about the finished piece, but also the satisfaction that comes from the small achievements along the journey. Snap photos of your work at different stages, whether it’s finishing the ribbing, conquering a challenging section, or completing the final bind-off. Celebrating these milestones helps keep you motivated and gives you a sense of pride in the work you’ve done. We will have a special evening event on Friday night during the Next Level Knitting Conference, on April 4th, where everyone can wear their KAL sweaters. Think of this as your NLKC sweater!
