Fashion Framework Spring 2023

Beyond the Pattern

This crescent shawl is designed as a simple but enjoyable knit. Worked top down in two colors, it is fully reversible. Garter stitch keeps things easy and reversible, while the eyelet lace adds interest to the garter stitch body. A fan stitch lace edging, easy to work and also reversible, worked in a second color, adds a frilly edge and an opportunity to add a pop of color. Short rows add more depth to the center of the shawl while still keeping the crescent shape.

Shawl

Work Garter Crescent pat, Rows 1–2 nine times until you have 63 sts. You may want to place a removable st marker indicating the RS of the work after you have a few rows on the needles.

DESIGNER NOTE—To modify the pattern, as long as you have a combined increase rate of 6 stitches over every 2 rows, you should get the crescent shape. Play around with what increases you use, and in what combinations you use them, to get a completely different-looking fabric. The increases and decreases used here create a “faggoting” lace along the edges of the shawl.

Work Rows 1–4 of Eyelet 1 Section once—75 sts.

Resume Garter Crescent pat and rep Rows 1–2 five times—105 sts.

Rep Row 1–4 of Eyelet 2 Section once—117 sts.

Cont as foll:
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 11 times—183 sts.
Then work Rows 1–4 of Eyelet 1 Section once—195 sts.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 5 times—225 sts.
Then work Rows 1–4 of Eyelet 2 Section once—237 sts.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 7 times—279 sts.
Work Rows 1–8 of Short Row Section—285 sts.

DESIGNER NOTE—To modify the pattern, adding short rows in addition to the increases on each edge helps to deepen the shawl without adding width. You may make the shawl even deeper by adding more short rows towards the center. You may also add more sets of short rows to further deepen the shawl.

Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 3 more times—303 sts.
Then work Rows 1–4 of Eyelet 1 Section once—315 sts.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 5 times—345 sts.
Then work Rows 1–4 of Eyelet 2 Section once—357 sts.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 7 times—399 sts.
Work Rows 1–8 of Short Row Section—405 sts.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat 3 more times—423 sts.

Cut Color A, join Color B.
Work Rows 1–2 of Garter Crescent pat once—429 sts.

Inc Row (RS): K3, sm, yo, k1, yo, k1, (k59, kfb) six times, knit to 1 st before marker, yo, k1, yo, sm, k3—439 sts.

Work Rows 1–10 of Fan Stitch 3 times, for 30 total rows.

BO all sts loosely kwise on WS as foll:
K1, slip st back to LH needle, *k2tog tbl, slip st back to LH needle; rep from * across all sts to last st.

Cut tail and thread through last st.

Finishing

Block aggressively to produce the crescent shape and weave in all ends.
