Confident Beginner Summer 2024
Beyond the Pattern
This sleeveless top pattern accompanies the Skill Building article on picking up stitches along curved edges. This technique is used for both the neckband and armhole bands. A lace panel is centered on both the front and back, and the back neckline is lower than the front neckline. The length shown in the sample is cropped. If you want the top longer, additional yarn will be necessary.

Gauge
In St st, 25 sts & 34 rows = 4″/10cm. Leafy Lace Panel measures 4.5″ wide. To save time, take time to check gauge.
Abbreviations
EOR—End of row.
CDD—Central Double Decrease: Sl 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass the 2 slipped sts over the knit st.
Sssk—Slip, slip, slip, knit: Slip the next 3 sts kwise, one at a time, to the RH needle; pass them back to LH needle. Knit the 3 sts tog through the back lps.
Stitch Pattern
See Leafy Lace chart.
DESIGNER NOTE—An even number of stitches are cast on for the K1P1 ribbing and worked for 1″, ending with a RS row. (The even number of stitches ensures that the K1P1 pattern will be maintained when the pieces are seamed.) Since the pattern multiple for the Leafy Lace stitch pattern is 31 sts, one stitch must be increased in the center panel. On the next WS row, markers are placed on either side of the center panel and the increase is made at the same time.
Back
Using the long-tail cast on, CO 94 (106, 118, 130) [142, 154, 166] {178, 190, 202} sts.
Next Row (WS): Work in K1P1 ribbing to the EOR. Work in pat as est until the piece measures 1″ ending with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Work 32 (38, 44, 50) [56, 62, 68] {74, 80, 86} sts in pat as est, pm, inc 1, work next 30 sts in pat as est, pm, work to EOR—95 (107, 119, 131) [143, 155, 167] {179, 191, 203} sts.
Next Row (RS): K32 (38, 44, 50) [56, 62, 68] {74, 80, 86} sts, work Row 1 of the Leafy Lace chart, knit to EOR. Work in pat as est until the piece measures 10.5 (10.5, 10.5, 10.5) [12.5, 12.5, 12.5] {12.5, 12.5, 12.5}”.
DESIGNER NOTES—The Leafy Lace pattern is better balanced if stitches are bound off after Row 6 is complete, but depending on your row gauge, this may not be possible. It is assumed that for Sizes XS–L, Rows 1–18 will be repeated four times and Rows 1–6 one time. For Sizes 1X–6X, Rows 1–18 will be repeated five times and Rows 1-6 one time.
On the Back, the Armhole Shaping and Neck Shaping are worked AT THE SAME TIME.
