Lattice Placemats by Heather Storta

Lattice Placemats by Heather Storta

Beyond the Pattern

These placemats feature a firm cast-on and bind-off edge. The textured stitch pattern keeps plates and tableware from sliding around and provides visual interest. The small stripes at top and bottom add a contrasting color “pop.” Use colors that complement your décor, and elevate your table with these cotton/linen placemats!

Special Techniques

Doubled Cable CO

Using smaller needles and yarn held double, make a slip knot and place on LH needle. Knit 1 st into slip knot without removing slip knot from LH needle, then sl st on RH needle kwise onto LH needle. *Place RH needle between the last 2 sts on LH needle and pull up a loop. Sl loop on RH needle kwise onto LH needle; rep from * until one fewer than desired sts have been cast on. Place RH needle between the last 2 sts on LH needle and pull up a loop. Move yarn forward between the two needles, then sl st on RH needle kwise onto LH needle.

Roped Cable BO

Using larger needles, cast on 1 st to LH needle using backwards loop CO. Then, *k1, sl 1 st to cn and hold to back. Slip next LH needle st knitwise to RH needle, then slip both sts back purlwise and k2togtbl. Pass RH st back to LH needle purlwise. Move working yarn behind cn and slip cn st to LH needle purlwise; rep from * until 2 sts remain. K2togtbl to end. Cut yarn and pull tail through. Weave tail through RS to WS below corner to maintain a crisp corner before weaving in the end. See this video.

Placemat (Make 4)

With smaller needles and MC held double, CO 87 sts using Doubled Cable CO method. Drop second strand of MC when cast on is complete. (On first row of knitting, knit each doubled stitch as one to still end up with 87 sts.)

Bottom Border

Row 1 (RS): P1, (k2, p1) twice, pm, knit to last 7 sts, pm, (p1, k2) twice, p1.
Row 2 (WS): K1, (p2, k1) twice, sm, purl to marker, sm, (k1, p2) twice, k1.
Row 3: P1, (k2, p1) twice, sm, knit to marker, sm, (p1, k2) twice, p1.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 once more.

Switch to CC and work 1 row in pat as est.
Switch to MC and work 3 rows in pat.
Switch to CC and work 2 rows in pat. Cut CC.
Work 2 rows in pat with MC.

Begin working Lattice pat as foll:
Next Row (RS): P1, (k2, p1) twice, sm, work in Lattice pat to marker, sm, (p1, k2) twice, p1.
Next Row (WS): K1, (p2, k1) twice, sm, work in Lattice pat to marker, sm, (k1, p2) twice, k1.

Work in Lattice pat as est for 15 repeats or until placemat is 2” shorter than desired height, ending with a Row 1 of Lattice pat.
