Buttoned Up Ribbon Pillow by Kathy Perry

Buttoned Up Ribbon Pillow by Kathy Perry

Beyond the Pattern

I thought it would be fun to create the look of a plaid holiday ribbon with knitting. With that in mind, I decided to make a simple pillow with a ribbon incorporated in the design. I added a lacy scalloped edge that is one of my favorites to add to blankets, sweaters, and hats. It creates a perfect beginning edge to fold over and button down.

14” pillow

Finished Measurements

Width: 14”
Length: 31.5”

Universal Yarn BELLA CASH WORSTED (186yds/170m, 100g/3.5oz, 60% Fine Merino Superwash Wool, 30% Nylon, 10% Cashmere): 2 skeins Asparagus (A), *1 skein each Cabernet (B), *Ebony (C), and *Oat (D)
(*Note: Pillow takes approx 15 yards of both B and D and 10 yards of C. You can use your stash of yarn for any red, black and cream)
Size 8 (5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
14” pillow form
Pins, sewing needle, and thread
Black ribbon: .5 yard of .25” ribbon
Black buttons or beads (5-7)

In St st, 18 sts & 24 rows = 4”/10cm. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Stitch Pattern

Scalloped Edge (multiple of 11 sts)

Using A, CO 66 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Rows 3 and 4: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: *K2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, k2tog; rep from *.
Rows 6, 8, 10, and 12: Purl.
Rows 7 and 9: Rep Row 5.
Row 11: Knit.
Row 13: K1, *k2tog, yo; rep from *, then k1, k2tog.
Row 14: Purl.

Cont with A in St st and work even until the piece measures 22.5” from beg, ending on WS.

DESIGNER NOTE—The ribbon design is made up of stripes of different colors. Row 1 and Row 19 (only) are in Fair Isle but they can be done in A, with duplicate stitch in D added after the pillow is completed.

Ribbon Design

Row 1 (RS): Work Fair Isle with A and D (alternate colors every other stitch). (See DESIGNER NOTE, above.)
Cont in St st, working stripes with the colors indicated.
Row 2 (WS): D.
Row 3 and 4: B.
Row 5: D.
Row 6 and 7: B.
Row 8 and 9: A.
Row 10: C.
Rows 11 and 12: A.
Rows 13 and 14: B.
Row 15: D.
Rows 16 and 17: B.
Row 18: D.
Row 19: Rep Row 1.
Row 20: A.

Cont with A in St st and work even until the piece measures 31.5” from beg, ending on WS. BO.

If doing duplicate stitch instead of Fair Isle, add D to Rows 1 and 19 on every other stitch. Using C and D, add vertical long running stitches to ribbon following picture above.
Hide and secure ends.

Scalloped Edge

Fold pillow so that scalloped edge overlaps BO edge by about 3”. Pin, baste, and tack edge down. Tack down sides of edge. Sew decorative buttons or beads to scallop centers so pillow looks “buttoned up.” Thread ribbon through top row of eyelets and tack in place.

Pin sides after measuring carefully so that they are the same length and rows line up correctly. Using mattress stitch, close one side. Hide and secure any remaining ends. Add pillow form, pin closed, and mattress stitch remaining side closed.
