Beyond the Pattern
I thought it would be fun to create the look of a plaid holiday ribbon with knitting. With that in mind, I decided to make a simple pillow with a ribbon incorporated in the design. I added a lacy scalloped edge that is one of my favorites to add to blankets, sweaters, and hats. It creates a perfect beginning edge to fold over and button down.

Finishing
Ribbon
If doing duplicate stitch instead of Fair Isle, add D to Rows 1 and 19 on every other stitch. Using C and D, add vertical long running stitches to ribbon following picture above.
Hide and secure ends.
Scalloped Edge
Fold pillow so that scalloped edge overlaps BO edge by about 3”. Pin, baste, and tack edge down. Tack down sides of edge. Sew decorative buttons or beads to scallop centers so pillow looks “buttoned up.” Thread ribbon through top row of eyelets and tack in place.
Pin sides after measuring carefully so that they are the same length and rows line up correctly. Using mattress stitch, close one side. Hide and secure any remaining ends. Add pillow form, pin closed, and mattress stitch remaining side closed.
