Bandonacci by Frank H. Jernigan

Bandonacci by Frank H. Jernigan

Beyond the Pattern

The idea for this sweater began with a simple design challenge. I wanted to create a series of vertical bands descending from one shoulder down the front, each with a different width and length. The widths follow the opening numbers of the Fibonacci sequence 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 stitches, which naturally led to the mash-up name: Bandonacci.

After some research and experimentation for working intarsia in the round, I’m delighted with how this design came together, and I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing Bandonacci as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Special Techniques

Crochet Provisional Cast On

This cast on is used at the underarm so that area is seamless. See this video demonstrating how to cast on the stitches and pick them up later to work in the opposite direction.

Intarsia in the Round

See this video for “Intarsia ITR instructions for the Bandonacci sweater,” created for this pattern.

Stranded Colorwork in Intarsia

With MC, knit or purl to 1 st before first CC st of stranded colorwork pat. Trap the CC by crossing it over the MC thread before the final MC st is worked. Drop the MC and pick up the CC, passing it over the MC to beg working the stranded colorwork. Work the final CC st of the part. Pick up the MC from under the CC to cont the non-stranded section. Or see this video.

Invisible Ribbed Bind Off (or Kitchener Bind Off)

See this video demonstrating this technique.

Construction Notes

This crew-neck sweater, worked from the top down, starts by casting on stitches for the left and right back shoulders. After working a few rows, stitches are cast on to join the shoulders and form the back of the neck, then the back is knitted flat for a few more rows. Stitches are then picked up in the cast-on edges to work the right and left front shoulders, which are ultimately joined and stitches cast on to complete the front neckline. As the neck shaping is worked, stitches are picked up along the selvedge edges of the shoulders for the sleeve caps. Sleeve caps are worked simultaneously with the body until the end of the sleeve openings. Once the sleeve caps are completed, the sleeve stitches are put on holders while the rest of the body is knit. Then the sleeve stitches are worked down to the wrists.

Back Shoulders

Using larger needles, MC, and long-tail cast on, CO 14 (17, 19, 22, 24) [27, 29, 32, 34] sts for the back Right Shoulder. With second strand of yarn, CO the same number of sts for the back Left Shoulder. Both back shoulders are worked at the same time.

Row 1 (RS): K4 (6, 7, 8, 10) [11, 12, 14, 14] sts then, using a length of CC measuring 17 (17, 17, 18, 18) [18, 19, 19, 19] yards, k5 in CC, start a new strand of MC and knit to end. Knit to end of Right Shoulder using MC.

Row 2 (WS): Purl to end of Right Shoulder. Maintaining the 5-st intarsia pat on Left Shoulder, p5 (6, 6, 7, 8) [9, 10, 11, 11], w&t, knit to neck edge. On Right Shoulder, k5 (6, 6, 7, 8) [9, 10, 11, 11], w&t, purl to neck edge. On Left Shoulder, p10 (12, 12, 14, 16) [18, 20, 22, 22], picking up wrap, w&t, knit to neck edge. On Right Shoulder, k10 (12, 12, 14, 16) [18, 20, 22, 22], picking up wrap, w&t, purl to neck edge. On Left Shoulder purl in pat to end, picking up wrap.

Front Shoulders

With WS facing, MC, and CO edge of Left Shoulder at the top, using the needle emerging from the sweater’s left side below and a separate strand of yarn for each front piece, pu pwise and purl 14 (17, 19, 22, 24) [27, 29, 32, 34] sts from the middle of each st of the CO row—14 (17, 19, 22, 24) [27, 29, 32, 34] sts on each shoulder. Both front shoulders are worked at the same time.
