Networking at h+h americas: Elevate Your Craft Business with TKGA

Are you ready to take your craft business to the next level? The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA) will be at the h+h americas wholesale trade show for the crafts industry in Chicago from May 7 to May 9, 2025, and we want to help you make the most of this event. Networking is one of the key opportunities that h+h americas offers!

If you have completed one of TKGA’s certification courses and are working in the craft industry, make sure to stop by the TKGA booth, #541 Level 1. We are eager to support your business by displaying your marketing materials—flyers, postcards, business cards, or small logo items. Whether you are a designer, tech editor, sample knitter, knitting instructor, or knitting judge, increasing your visibility at the show can lead to increased sales and new opportunities.

Why Attend h+h americas?

Attending a trade show like h+h americas is a significant investment. As a TKGA member, you benefit from free 3-day admission to the show floor! This offer is available for TKGA members working in various roles within the craft world, including designers, teachers, content creators, yarn shop staff, yarn companies, indie dyers, tech editors, craft makers, and sample knitters.

However, there are additional costs to consider, such as travel and lodging expenses, registration fees for workshops, and the costs of having someone else manage your home and work responsibilities while you’re away.

Set Your Goals

The first step in making the most of your trade show experience is setting clear goals. Here are some examples:

  • Retailers: Discover new products and techniques, and find new suppliers for staple products.
  • Designers/Service Providers: Meet with existing clients face-to-face and introduce yourself to new potential clients and collaborators.
  • Education: Improve your marketing and merchandising skills, optimize your operating and management systems, and attend business classes.

Building and maintaining relationships should be a top priority. Good networking is about connecting with people in a meaningful way. A trade show is an invaluable opportunity to nurture relationships that will support you throughout your career.

Make your goals specific and write them down. Keep this list handy as you register for the show and create your schedule.

Prepare for the Show

Proper preparation can make a significant difference in your trade show experience. Here are some tips:

  • Exhibitor List: Spend time reviewing the exhibitor list. Click on listings to view descriptions, links to websites, and contact information. Many exhibitors also provide wholesale price lists, sell sheets, and other valuable information.
  • Elevator Pitch: Craft a concise and compelling description of your business. When asked what you do, have a snappy sentence ready that succinctly describes your interests and business.

Networking Tips, not just for Introverts

Networking might seem daunting, especially for introverts, but it’s essential for building your business and community. Here are some strategies to help you make the most of networking:

  • Work on Your Elevator Pitch: Have a brief and engaging description of your business ready to share.
  • Ask Questions: Engage others by asking questions about their work and interests. This can also help deflect attention if you’re feeling self-conscious.
  • Go Deep: Focus on making a few meaningful connections rather than trying to meet everyone.
  • Allow Space for Serendipity: Be open to unexpected opportunities and experiences.
  • Be Yourself: Authenticity is key. Don’t fake confidence—embrace your true self.
  • Follow Up: Forge new friendships into lasting relationships by following up with new contacts within a week of the event.

By following these strategies, you can make the most of your time at h+h americas and create lasting connections that will benefit your craft business for years to come. Don’t forget to stop by the TKGA booth to promote your business and connect with fellow members on Wednesday and Thursday, May 7-8, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Friday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!
