Until our next Charity Drive (Fall 2025), if you’d like to knit donations in your spare time, below are guidelines from the 2024 drive:

Items Needed:  Finished Blankets (lap blankets for adults in nursing homes, child sized blankets which are in demand, and baby blankets), 7×9″ Sections (these will be assembled by volunteers into blankets and the sections make a good project for student groups, new knitters, or knitters who can no longer knit lengthy projects.)  Hats, Gloves & Mittens, Scarves & Cowls, Sweaters for adult and children.

Yarn:  A medium weight, machine washable and dryable 100% acrylic yarn is ideal for Warm Up America! blankets and accessories because completed items are easy to clean and acrylic is what most places that receive the donations accept. However, if you’d like to knit an adult hat, scarf or sweater in a fiber like cotton or a machine washable wool blend, please attach a tag that says “Cotton” or “Wool” to the actual item since some people have allergies.

Patterns:  Use any pattern you wish.  Cast On has many patterns available to members to download for free.  For a quick search, enter the item type (ex: hat) in the search bar.

Group Activity: Our Charity Drive is a fantastic fall project for knitting groups, local guilds, and student groups.

Where does Warm Up America! send the items? Your handknit item will be sent to where it is needed at the time including senior care facilities, homeless shelters, children’s foster care organizations, community outreach non-profits, hospitals, schools, and hospice centers.  Many lap blankets are sent to senior care facilities, hospice, hospitals, and Meals on Wheels.  Veteran blankets (red/white/blue or camo) are sent to Soldier’s Angels, Tunnels to Towers or other veterans’ homes.
