What participants are saying about TKGA’s Retreats:
“The classes were great. All was well planned and well organized. And the best part was making new friends and spending time with those who come from many different places, with many different stories, but share the same passion about knitting and learning!”
— Mellody S. from Columbia Falls, MT
“I’m so looking forward to this retreat because I had such fun and learned so much at the last one. And Minneapolis is a lovely place to be in the fall. The TKGA staff did a wonderful job of organizing and keeping us involved. “
— Peg L. from Winter Springs, FL
“I’m excited to be signed up for TKGA’s 3rd Retreat! The instructors are top notch, and the length of the classes really allows you to dig in to the topics. The meals, the prize drawings, the field trip, and most importantly, spending time with old and new friends makes it a wonderful event.”
— Lynette from Iowa
“I’m looking forward to attending the TKGA retreat in Minneapolis. Last year’s retreat was outstanding – food, classes, speakers, and an awesome field trip. Most of all, I enjoy meeting other TKGA knitters. Fall season in Minnesota is a wonderful place for everyone to show off their knitted treasures!”
— Maris O., Fargo, ND
This year’s retreat attendees will be able to select from classes taught by Cecelia Campochiaro and Romi Hill, choosing one six-hour class for Friday, a 3-hour class for Saturday, and another 3-hour class for Sunday. When you register, you’ll be asked to choose one class for each day; you do not select the classes offered by just one instructor for the entire retreat (unless you want to!)
Classes have a maximum size of 25. Once a class is full, you can still register for it to be added to the waitlist. We’ll reserve a spot in the other class for you as well.
Friday Class Details (6 hours)
Reversible Knitting with Cecelia Campochiaro
This workshop is about stitch patterns that look the same on both sides. Topics will include the structure of reversible patterns, using charts and written instructions, tips for making the work easier, using color with reversible patterns, as well as many different kinds of reversible stitch patterns. There will be some swatching in class to illustrate the ideas.
Students should be able to make 4×4 ribbing with consistent tension and no laddering as a prerequisite.
Lacehacker with Romi Hill
Join me, well-known lace designer Romi Hill, in having some fun with my favorite lace tips and tricks in this hands-on class. Learn about materials for lace knitting, my favorite no-fail garter tab cast-on to keep lumps away, my favorite stretchy bind-off, tricks for keeping edges loose when switching colors, reading charts and/or using them to check your progress while using written instructions, avoiding errors and fixing errors when you make them, using markers to help keep track of pattern repeats, managing beads, and so many other things that will make your lace knitting life easier. We’ll be knitting up a mini shawl and putting all of these methods to use!
Saturday Class Details (3 hours)
Embellishing texture with color: Marls with Cecelia Campochiaro
Holding strands together where the strands are different colors, also known as marling, is an approach to color work with many big advantages: it’s easy, many color combinations are possible, and it is compatible with reversibility. One challenge is how to use all those colors. In this workshop you get an introduction to the technique of marling and you will play with color combinations and a technique called microswatching using yarn which will be supplied. Not only is it enjoyable to come up with your own color combinations, seeing the color combinations your classmates create is also part of the learning.
Holey Cables! with Romi Hill
Are you obsessed with cables and lace? Why not?! Join me, knitwear designer Romi Hill, as we dive into different ways to combine cables and holes in your knitting. There are cables in the midst of lace, cables with lace in the center, and cables with straight-up holes in the middle. Small cables can be used to hide increases in lace, and many cables can be edited to add lace and holes. I can’t wait to share my obsession with you!
Sunday Class Details (3 hours)
Modifying Stitch Patterns with Cecelia Campochiaro
This workshop will be about how to take a chart and modify it. The following modifications will be covered: switching between flat vs in the round, centering, pseudo centering, and mirroring. You will be using pencils, graph paper, scissors, and tape. If you don’t feel you are solid on using charts, this will be helpful.
Lacy Short Rows with Romi Hill
You know how short rows fit into a solid, and you probably have a favorite method. But what happens when your knitting has holes? How do those techniques transfer over? Short rows can hide in your lace or be a design element! Join Romi Hill in exploring the times we actually WANT to see those holes in our knitting! We’ll be swatching some different techniques as we work on a miniature shawl.

Cecelia Campochiaro
Cecelia Campochiaro appeared on the knitting scene in 2015 with her debut book, Sequence Knitting. Knitting was a casual pastime until she had an ah-ha moment in 2010 and realized that interesting textured fabrics could be created by the simple repetition of a sequence of stitches. This idea evolved and led to her writing Sequence Knitting, which is a reference book about this mindful approach to knitting.
In the years since Sequence Knitting debuted, she has continued to develop new ideas in knitting. Sequence Knitting is about texture, and her second book, Making Marls, published in 2020,is about color. In Making Marls, the technique of working multiple strands together as one is explored as a way to create a wide range of visual effects.
Her third book, Reversible Knitting, coming in Spring 2025, is a stitch dictionary of stitch patterns that look the same on both sides.
Cecelia lives in Silicon Valley, where for many years she developed specialized microscopes used in computer chip manufacturing. Textiles, photography and the arts have been a lifelong passion running in parallel with her technical life. In high school and college even though her main studies were in the sciences, she also studied drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and photography.
Not only is she interested in the arts and knitting, but also in books. Books have been the primary mechanism for knowledge transfer for over a thousand years. One of her missions is to honor that tradition and create books that are both informative, and also beautiful objects in and of themselves. Makers love beautiful things, and Cecelia feels strongly that books should be as lovely as tools and yarns. Today she is fully dedicated to the fiber world and “unventing” new ways to make amazing knit fabrics

Romi Hill
Romi Hill lives on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern Nevada, where the high desert nights are cool and the air is clear and crisp. A lifelong crafter and knitter, she is inspired by the natural surroundings in her corner of the world, and her designs have an organic flow. She specializes in lace of all weights, and her patterns are known for their knitterly details. She loves sharing her knitting knowledge – acquired through study, the generosity of other knitters, and lots of mistakes and experimenting – and regularly posts tutorials on Instagram and YouTube.
Romi’s lace book from Interweave Press: “New Lace Knitting” features timeless patterns for garments and accessories. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines and books, and knit by thousands. Check out her eBook collections and subscriptions on Ravelry where you can see her full pattern collection. Find her on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube at @RomiDesigns, and “Romi” on Ravelry.

How about if I want to bring my non-knitting spouse/friend?
Sign up for a single attendee room and a non-knitting spouse or friend can stay with you at no extra charge. Guests can join the retreaters at the Opening Reception and Dinner with prior arrangement at an additional charge – contact Celia Cahill at ccahill@tkga.org to make arrangements.
All other meals, as well as classes and activities, are for retreat attendees only. Guests may be welcome to join in the late night knitting and socializing if there is room available.
Explain how the classes work.
Classes taught by Cecelia Campochiaro and Romi Hill will be taught concurrently, with two set for Friday (morning/afternoon), another Saturday morning, and a final set on Sunday morning.
The most either classroom will hold is 25 students, so once a class reaches that registration level, it’s considered closed. New registrants will be automatically put into the other class held at the same time and added to a waiting list for the preferred class.
What's the meal setup?
The retreat is set up to be virtually all inclusive, with all meals except for Saturday dinner included. This means a full breakfast each day, along with buffet lunches and theme dinners held in the Ballroom. Dietary restrictions, such as vegan/vegetarian, gluten free, etc., should be noted on the registration form.
There will also be beverage service (coffee/tea/water) provided in the hallway outside the classrooms each day. For late night knitting and socializing, there is a cash bar in the hotel lobby.
A highlight of the retreat is the Opening Reception and Dinner. The reception includes a voucher for two drinks, then a luxe plated dinner.
We know many people will want to explore the San Francisco Bay Area, so we left time for optional activities after our outing on Saturday. This also gives retreaters the chance to sample the local cuisine at your leisure on Saturday evening.
Will there be any other activities?
Yes! We have a chartered bus that will be taking us on a trip to a Royal Bee Yarn Company event in beautiful Pacifica, CA on Saturday afternoon. We will also have guest speakers on Friday lunch and dinner with local knitting artisans and a small vendor marketplace.
What if I want to come to San Francisco early or stay later?
Rooms are available at the Doubletree Hotel – San Francisco Airport at our preferred rate (including taxes) of $181 per night for up to 3 nights before and after the retreat. Just make note on the registration form!
I live in the Bay Area. Can I just come for the day?
The retreat is set up to be an intensive, all-inclusive, on-site educational experience – an immersion into knitting, if you will. That assumes everyone would be staying on site for the duration of the retreat.
This was the approach in our contract with the host hotel, which means we are contractually obligated for the rooms and meals, and why only an all inclusive rate is offered. There is no day rate. But even if you live in the Bay Area, consider that you may enjoy the getaway feel of the retreat, even in your local area.
What are the travel options?
One of the reasons we chose the Doubletree Hotel – San Francisco Airport is that it’s easy to get to!
For those flying in, the Doubletree Hotel provides a free 24 hour shuttle from the San Francisco Airport (SFO). Shuttle service is available every 15 minutes from 5 am to 1 am and every 30 minutes from 1:30 am to 5 am.
For those coming from elsewhere in the Bay Area, the free hotel shuttle also serves the closest BART station.
For those driving, parking is at a reduced rate of $10 per night for our retreaters.
